Granada Learning Group of Companies

At the heart of education

The Granada Learning Group of Companies is a leading force in UK Education, with a wide portfolio of expertise in all key areas across the globe. Its wealth of core capabilities extends across the board to include software, video, textbook publishing, Special Educational Needs publishing, training, testing and assessment, and online learning.

Granada Learning is one of the UK’s leading educational multimedia companies, publishing innovative curriculum based resources for the UK and over 30 other countries. It was formed in March 1998 when Granada Media Group acquired YITM (Yorkshire International Thomson Multimedia) and rebranded the business as Granada Learning.

It currently supplies around 95 per cent of the 32,000 schools in the UK, and the home market, with a catalogue of over 800 software and hardware products. Through its subsidiary SEMERC it is also the leading supplier of both hardware and software to around 3,000 UK Special Needs Schools and the Special Needs Departments in the remaining 29,000 mainstream schools.

Granada Learning also supplies educational software to approximately 90 per cent of schools in Singapore and is working with distributors to convert the language and the content of Granada’s educational products for the Asian market.

The increasing high profile of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in schools and the introduction of the UK National Grid for Learning continues to increase demand for high quality educational software. Granada Learning involves teachers and other educationalists in the production of all of its CD-ROMS to ensure that it continues to publish for the needs of schools.

LearnWise

Granada Learning has recently launched LearnWise, an e-learning framework. LearnWise is the result of a public private partnership between Granada and the University of Wolverhampton, who developed much of the system, previously known as WOLF (Wolverhampton Open Learning Framework), under the guidance of Professor Steve Molyneux. This development further strengthens our position as a major player in the fast-growing international e-learning market. This new product provides not only the basis for further entry into the Further and Higher Education markets but will provide a technology platform for the Granada Learning Group which includes Letts Educational, NFER-NELSON and Anglia Multimedia.

The Granada Learning Group of Companies also includes:

Letts – In September 1999, Granada Learning bought Letts Educational, the UK’s leading publisher of examination revision materials, with 60 per cent of the home learning market and products for sale in approximately 2,500 shops across the country. Letts is also a major supplier of Primary Schools, where 20 per cent of children use Letts Literacy and Numeracy books.

BlackCat – In October 1999, Granada Learning reinforced its strong position in the Primary School sector by acquiring BlackCat, a key and innovative publisher of educational software for Primary Schools.

NFER-NELSON – In June 2000, Granada Learning bought NFER-NELSON, the leading provider of test and assessment products for the UK education market, with its products widely used in over 75 per cent of UK schools.

Anglia Multimedia and AngliaCampus – In November 2000, Granada Media acquired United News and Media’s Television assets, which included Anglia Multimedia and AngliaCampus.
